Simon is a sophomore at the University of St. Thomas, studying mechanical engineering with a minor in biomedical engineering. He researches direct ink writing (DIW) of biomedical sensors with the Lee Research Group. Originally from Nicaragua and a UWC Mahindra College graduate, he brings a global perspective to his work.
A Physics Internal Assessment investigating whether opening a car's windows increases fuel consumption more than running the air conditioning. Used CFD simulation (SimFlow/OpenFOAM) on a 3D-modeled 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe to compare drag force and drag coefficient across five speeds, in both open- and closed-window configurations.
A mathematical exploration deriving an illumination function from the inverse square law and 3D distance geometry, then testing it against 180 real lux measurements taken across a study desk to find where light is concentrated and where it's lost.
